Safety & security in Thailand

Tips for British travellers

Thailand is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:

Carry your valuables and cash securely to guard against pickpocketing.

Beware of bag-snatchers, especially on motorbikes.

Do not hand over your passport as a guarantee, for example to motorcycle rental businesses.

Police may ask to check your passport, and a copy of the photo page is usually sufficient.

Take care when swimming off coastal areas and follow warning signs, especially red flags on beaches.

Bonus tips:

Do not leave your drinks unattended or accept drinks from strangers, as drink spiking can occur in tourist areas.

It is illegal to smoke in public with a fine of up to 5,000 Thai baht, and e-cigarettes are illegal to carry or use.
